A Local Nursery: Shelburne Vermont
Just last week, I was driving down a country lane in Shelburne, Vermont when I found this little nursery — tucked away from the road and otherwise understated except for the profusion of wreaths adorning the front entrance. I made a quick turn and circled back.
It’s everything you’ve dreamed of for your local nursery — small, but personal. It’s easy to see the outdoor tables that must be overflowing with flowers and veggie starts in spring. Most likely with plants that reflect the climate, growing season and interests of its neighbors.
It’s shops like these that express the character of place.
Inside I found a potting station, racks of ribbon, seeds and a greenhouse filled with poinsettias and cyclamens. I was happy to see that High Mowing Seeds, a Vermont seed company, and Botanical Interests up front and center but it was the bright glow of the greenhouse filling the shop that drew me in.
Rows and rows of poinsettias and a corner of cyclamens are left and waiting for a home. The greenhouse will be shut down after Christmas. The heat turned off, the plants composted or otherwise put to use and dormancy embraced until the tickle of spring comes along again in just a few short months.
Thank you Gardenside Nursery for a bright moment on a December day.
