Sneak Peek at the Grow What You Love Book! Releasing March 2018

Many of you may know that I’ve been squirreled away this past year writing my first book!

The title of the book is Grow What You Love: 12 Food Plant Families to Change Your Life, published with Firefly Books, and it’s no ordinary book about gardening. It’s an adventure into a life worth living, filled with food, flowers, and fun — and it starts with growing what you love, of course!

Pre-order the book here.

My days since last November were a whirlwind, with long hours spent hunched over my computer either writing or managing photos (next order of business is a standing desk!). Or, if I was lucky, I found myself out in the garden tending to the best of the best kitchen garden edibles featured in the book, or in the kitchen playing with recipes (my family is now a well-practiced team of recipe testers and happily so).

The goal was to create a book that is as inspirational as it is informative — and this is that book.

You’ll find Grow What You Love is chock full of gorgeous photographs (over 250 images to be precise) and playfully illustrated. It’s filled with personal notes, essential charts and tables, and all the tools you’ll need to grow a garden, whether you’re starting from scratch or fine-tuning an existing garden.

In it, I outline simple methods for growing 12 sets of seasonal ingredients to change the way you cook and live. It starts with an exploration of how best to choose plants and recipes you love, and then follows simple methods for garden-to-table growing and seasonal approaches to cooking.

Each of the chapters in The Plant Directory is punctuated by a recipe, or set of recipes, that are method based so ingredients are easily mixed and matched, providing further inspiration. For isn’t it true that the foods you love and the recipes you crave season after season are your roadmap of what to plant and grow, making everyday living wonderful? Why is it that cutting into a tomato, still warm from the sun a cause for celebration? Or that store bought jam never tastes as good as homemade? Growing some of your own ingredients shifts the way you think about cooking because now the story of the things you eat — at least some of it — is your story too.

As I say in the book…

“When you take time to grow what you love, wonderful things happen. A remarkable yet simple sequence of events unfolds. The small step of planting and growing a handful of beloved ingredients is really a small step toward approaching life a little differently, a little more deliberately — and finding beauty in food, nature, seasons, and healthy, hand-made living.”

The key to a happy life is taking time to find joy in the simple things.

Grow What You Love releases in March of 2018 with Firefly Books. Pre-order the book at either Barnes & Noble or Indigo, or look for it in your local bookstore in March. And don’t forget to look for me as I take it on tour.
